Family and Marriage

Misbun Sidek was the oldest son of Dato' Haji Sidek which the story of their family has been adapted in cartoon version and comic. The cartoon version and comic become popular among the children in that era which told the story about Sidek’s siblings.

In 1984, Misbun has introduced his future wife toward the Badminton player, fans and his family which known as Latifah. He married with his wife three years later after he introduced his wife to his family. The couple has eight children but two of them have died which the 6 surviving children that they have are Misbun Syawal Misbun, Lia Murni , Misbun Ramadan, , Lia Alifah, Lia Dewi Rubita, and Misbun Awalauddin. In 2010, his wife was suffering from kidney failure as he was the coach for Lee Chong Wei. With the conditions of his wife, Misbun Sidek willing to coach Lee Chong Wei for the London Olympics Games as he thinks that it was his responsibility.

As he wanted his son to follow his lead to become the professional badminton player, Misbun coaches his second sons, Misbun Ramdan to become the legendary in history of badminton. He received his first title by defeating Mohd Arif Abdul Latif in the men’s singles final of the Pahang Open in Kuantan.

Coaching and later player

Misbun Sidek didn’t stop to bring Malaysia name into world stage as he broadens his skills in playing badminton by coaching the Malaysian National team. Before Misbun taking the decision to involve with the car business, he acted as the assistant coach where he become the assistant coach for his brother Rashid Sidek that was played for the first singles for Thomas cup in 1992. Malaysia name once again being be lifted as Rashid wins Thomas cup in 1992 after 25 years Malaysia drought.

In addition, he also coached including Rashid, the Hashim brother, Roslin and the Lee Chong Wei which has been ranked by Badminton World Federation as the World Number one Badminton Player.

He has been the coach for Lee Chong Wei for almost 6 years were Lee has consider Misbun as his coach and father that help him a lot in achieving for the title of World number 1 badminton player. Quoted from what Lee Chong Wei said that "I am loyal to my coach. After all, he has been the man behind my rise as a successful player (over the last six years). I will follow him.” Malaysia has received a lot of award from badminton sports as Lee Chong Wei has become he was under the tutelage of Misbun Sidek. As Misbun lead his brother Rashid Sidek to get bronzer at Atlanta Olympics in 1996, help Muhammad Hafiz Hashim get the title for All England in 2003 and create a title for Roslin Hashim which is the world number one player in 2001, Misbun has been certificated by the title “Datuk” by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka, Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob. At 31th December 2010, Misbun resigned as the National Coach for the Badminton team.

Misbun has regain his spirits to back into the badminton court once again as he participated in the local competitions in the middle of 1990s. As Misbun back in the game, he wins 7 consecutive Selangor Open championships. Besides, Misbun name once again been tainted in the Malaysia history as he won gold medals at the World Masters Games in Melbourne, Australia for categories 35 and over men’s single and mixed double.

In Datuk Misbun Sidek era, he was known as “giant killer” as he becomes the legendary player in the badminton sports as well as he can defeat the other player in his era. In addition, Datuk Misbun Sidek received 8 title along with his career as the badminton player which are from the championships of German Open, Swedish Open,
Canadian Open, Malaysia Open, Chinese Taipei Open and Singapore Open.

Datuk Misbun Sidek name has been recognized by the other international player as he bring up the name of Malaysia by bring home his first title on the international circuit at the 1981 German Open. Unfortunately, in 1982, at the Badminton World Cup Championships, Misbun suffers some disappointment when he lost with Lim Siew King, Indonesia Badminton ace which the score 10-1 on the third set.  On the way to achieve the title of winner at World Cup Championships, Misbun has defeated the legendary player in that era which are Luis Pongoh (Indonesia), Morten Frost Hansen (Denmark) and Prakash Padukone (India).

Because the achievement that he achieved, he was named as Malaysia’s Sportsman of the year in 1982. Plus, because of Misbun skills, talents and achievement in Badminton, he become the southeast Asia first player that signed a contract with the International Management Group (IMG) which then represented such big-name sports stars as Bjorn Borg. Misbun Sidek name has been tainted in the history of badmintons as he was equal with the other international player in that area. In 1989, Misbun announced his retirement at the age 29.

Early Achievement of Misbun Sidek



Datuk Misbun Sidek has been introduced with badminton when he was in the early age by his own father. He received support from his father and family to become the legendary badminton in his era. Datuk Misbun Sidek was teach by his own father in the backyard of his house before was spotted by Khoo Teng Yuen, Badminton Association Of Malaysia (BAM) Coach.

To improve and polish the talent that Datuk Misbun Sidek has, his coach transfer him to Victoria Institution. Misbun represents his school at the age of 12 and become the school championship at the age of 15.

In addition, at the age of 16, he has been selected to become the representative for Malaysia at the Championships in Hong Kong and at the Australia Open (Silver Bowl). Plus, his talent also unleashed when he was partnered with his brother Razif Sidek to reach semi finals of the World Championships in 1980 when he was 19 years old.

Dato Misbun Sidek which more likely to be known as Bun once become one of the legendary badminton player in Malaysia. Besides, he also been known by public as a “Giant Killer” which he could defeat the other player in his era. In addition, the years that Misbun active is in 1976 until 1989. His full name is Mohmed Misbun bin Mohamed Sidek which he is the eldest son of the famous six Sidek brothers. The story of Sidek Brother's has been adapted into comic and cartoon as that becomes the popular series of cartoon for the children in that era.

Dato Misbun Sidek was born in 17th February 1960 at Kanchong Darat, Banting, Selangor. He received an early education in primary school in Banting and then furthers his studies at Victoria Institutaion, Kuala Lumpur. His Father, Datuk Sidek, imagine that one day, his sons will become the badminton aces. His Father becomes the coach toward him and his brothers. Plus, Misbun has been teach by his father seriously by practicing at the badminton court infront of his house.

Introduction of Malaysia Outstanding Personnel (Datuk Misbun Sidek)




Asalamualaikum, Hye everyone, welcome to my blog. The topic that i choose for the blog DNMC assignment is the Malaysia outstanding personnel which is Datuk Misbun Sidek. The aim or objective for this blog is To get an inspiration and motivation from the history of Datuk Misbun Sidek as the hero of Badminton field in Malaysia. As he was the championships that bring Malaysia name international in the badminton sports.
